Editor’s Farewell

Now that both my boys have graduated, I wanted to personally reach out and thank the CVHS Wrestling community for your support over the last 5 years. You have all given endless hours to our various wrestling events — 2 Northern Region Tournaments, 2 CVHS Wrestlefests, Basket Bingo, Fundraising, and Tournament Trips. I cannot thank you enough for your support and steadfast commitment to our wrestling program and team. I have seen our Team’s success grow every year and I am so proud to have been a small part of this. I leave the Team and CVHS with a great group of parents (and coaches!!) to continue its winning tradition. I wish all of you the best of luck and look forward to seeing some great matches next year as a spectator!

Miller Commits to UNC-Greensboro

Senior Brett Miller, after taking a second visit to the beautiful campus at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), committed to wrestle for the Spartans beginning in the 2008 season. UNCG, part of the NCAA Division I Southern Conference, sent three wrestlers to the NCAA Tournament this year. Coached by Jason Loukides, the Spartans finished this past season with a 10-4 dual record and a 3-1 conference record. Combined, UNCG recorded 209 wins, 27 major decisions, and 42 falls. We wish Brett the best of luck!

Wildcats End Successful Season

The CVHS Wrestling Team held its final Team event for the year, celebrating its successes on and off the mat at Texas de Brazil. The following student-athletes were recognized for their contributions to the Wildcat wrestling team:

Brett Miller, Outstanding Wrestler Award
Emilio Garcia, Coaches Award
David Micklus, Coaches Award
Martin Seneca, Most Improved Wrestler Award

Radun Coach of the Year!

Congratulations to Coach Joe Radun for garnering the prestigious 2007-2008 Coach of the Year award in the Concorde District. The award was presented Wednesday night at the annual Northern Region Wrestling banquet at Annandale High School. Coach Radun has completed his 5th year at the helm of CVHS wrestling and, in that time, has coached 1 State Champion, 1 3rd Place State finisher, multiple Regional place winners, and multiple District champions. This year alone, the program sent 8 wrestlers to the Regional competition and 3 to the State tournament — the most in over a decade. We salute Coach Radun for his tireless efforts on behalf of the kids and Centreville High School. Well done, Coach!

MAWA South District Results!

Congratulations to Jackson Islin and Brett Miller for their placements in the MAWA Tournament Sunday, March 9th at Fauquier High School in Warrenton, Virginia. Miller took 1st place honors in the 171lb. weight class and Islin took 2nd place in the 135lb. weight class. Both Islin and Miller will advance to the MAWA Eastern Regional Tournament which will be held at the Wicomico Convention Center in Salisbury, Maryland April 6th. MAWA Madness

Registration for the Mid-Atlantic Wrestling Association (MAWA) Tournaments begin in March. The first Tournament is the District Tournament at Fauquier High School, Sunday March 9th. You can download the District Tournament Registration Form here. Early registration is due (address provided on the form) by March 6.

The 2008 Virginia AAA State Tournament has now ended. The Wildcats sent three wrestlers to the competition this weekend at Oscar Smith High School, the most in many, many years. Though the Cats didn’t fare as well as hoped, they wrestled tough and competed with Virginia’s Best of the Best. Congratulations to Senior Brett Miller (171), Junior Emilio Garcia (160), and Sophomore Jackson Islin (130) who competed with Virgina’s elite wrestlers. We are so proud of you! Wildcats Send 3 To States!

The Wildcats finished with a Team score of 76, giving them 8^th place in the Region at the conclusion of the Regional tournament at Fairfax High School. Senior Brett Miller (171) and Junior Emilio Garcia (160) both took 2^nd place honors. In a strange twist of fate, Jackson Islin (130) will take the 4th place seed and will join Miller and Garcia in representing the Wildcats at the State competition February 22-23 at Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake, Virginia. Congratulations Brett, Emilio, and Jackson! Other Wildcat medal winners include David Micklus (140), 6^th; and Martin Seneca (189), 6^th. Kudos to the other Wildcats who competed in this prestigious tournament: Ricky Williams (119), Danny Kim (135), Shaun Carter (145), Mike Dikeman (152), Dan Johnson (215) and Chris Dean (HWT). Your efforts gave Centreville its highest Regional Team Score in 10 years! Final scores and match results can be found here.
